An eighteenth-century silvered brass taperstick, with knopped stem, atop a stepped and shaped square base, the underside struck with maker's mark, 'IW', struck underneath with pseudo hallmarks identified as those used by John Walker, height 15cm approx Note: John Walker, Ironmonger and Brazier of Cheapside, London, who advertised "all Sorts of new-fashion?d French Plate so neatly finish?d that it is not to be discern?d from real Silver, he having the very best Workmen, and by him they are wholly employ?d"
