A Boer War medal pair awarded to: 9331 Private John Frances, Coldstream Guards. Comprising: a QSA Queen’s South Africa medal with 6 clasps Belmont, Modder River, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast (9331 Pte. J. Frances, Cldstm Gds:); and a KSA King's South Africa medal with 2 clasps South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902 (9331 Pte. J. Francis, Coldstream Guards).
Note: John Frances was born around 1873 near Hartlepool and enlisted for 3 years on the 17th November 1892, stating his age as 19, and his trade as a labourer. He was reserved when recalled to serve in the Boer War. He was discharged on the 16th November 1901, verified on medal roll. At Belmont, the battalion came under fire from Mont Blanc, and made a frontal assault with little loss, 7 men killed and 1 officer and 20 men wounded. At Modder River, the 1st battalions were in action and had to lie all day under heavy fire, their losses there were 20 men wounded. The 1st Battalion were also heavily engaged with 13 men killed and 5 officers and 50 men wounded.
