The son of a German diplomat father and French mother, American born Lorenz Bäumer grew up in a whirlwind of travel and culture. Graduating from the prestigious Ecole Centrale de Paris, Bäumer trained to be an engineer, but always had a passion for design, and furthermore, jewellery. Thus, he began his artistic journey in 1988 and was quickly spotted by Chanel, designing iconic pieces such as the Camélia, Matelassée, Coco rings and so many more. While working for Chanel, he began to exhibit his own work at 19 Place Vendome, next to the Ritz Hotel in Paris. Bäumer became known for his ready-to-wear high jewellery collections as well as his bespoke pieces such as the tiara designed for Princess Charlene of Monaco's wedding. The jeweller described his creative process as an 'endless journey' that is constantly inspired by the surrounding world. His goal is to create timeless yet modern pieces that blend cutting-edge technology with traditional techniques such as 3D printing and traditional engraving. Colour also plays a vital role in his craftsmanship, viewing it as a powerful tool to evoke emotion and life within a piece of jewellery, especially with the interplay of colour and light inside faceted stones. In an interview with Marco de Polo Magazine, Bäumer stated that he always saw "jewellery as an art form, a miniature sculpture that transforms the body into a canvas." When designing, he accounts for its movement, sensation against the skin, and how light will reflect from its surfaces. This approach, combined with his radical technical approaches like tattooing diamonds, has cemented the Bäumer name in the world of jewellery. The jeweller and engineer continued to design for Chanel until 2008, before going on to become the artistic director of Louis Vuitton from 2009 to 2014, creating the brand's first line of jewellery "L'Ame du Voyage." Bäumer has continued to gain recognition in the industry from international brands such as Boucheron and Van Cleed & Aprels. He believes that "Beauty is a promise of happiness" and that is what he has delivered time and time again.
