Fleetwood Charles Varley (1863-1942) for The Guild of Handicrafts (?), a large spot-hammered and patinated rectangular copper table box, early 20th century, the hinged overhanging top inset with a hard enamel panel decorated with a cascading upland river landscape, signed lower right 'Varley', the cedar-lined box supported by simple bun feet. 35 cm x 22 cm x 9cm high. A private collection. The artist and enameller Fleetwood Varley (British 1863-1942) was a friend of C.R. Ashbee and worked at the Guild of Handicraft at Chipping Camden and is known to have collaborated with Ashbee on some of his works. His work for Haselers was most often sold through Liberty & Co. in London.
