A Pair of Sumerian Early Dynastic Stone Vessels, Mesopotamia, 3rd-2nd Millennium BC - A pair of Sumerian Early Dynastic stone vessels, dating to the 3rd-2nd Millennium BC, from Mesopotamia. Likely hand-carved from a dark grey to greenish-grey stone such as schist, steatite, or chlorite, both vessels exhibit textured, somewhat rough surfaces characteristic of ancient craftsmanship. The object on the left is a cylindrical cup or container with a relatively uniform diameter and an open top. The object on the right is a conical cup or bowl, tapering from a wider open mouth to a narrower base. Their simple forms and finish suggest an ancient style.
