INK RUBBING OF NINGHT ARHART, HANGING SCROLL, 20TH CENTURY
A monochrome ink rubbing on paper, mounted as a hanging scroll, depicting the Ninth Arhat (Luohan) seated beneath a twisted tree. The figure, rendered with highly expressive facial features and elongated limbs, sits on a woven mat holding prayer beads, symbolizing his meditative discipline. His robes are adorned with finely patterned motifs, and his posture reflects inner calm and spiritual focus.
Above, the large tree is rendered with dynamic and stylized branches, swirling upward like a cosmic force — a visual metaphor for spiritual awakening or enlightenment. At the lower right, a small acolyte or attendant figure peeks out from the roots of the tree, a common trope in Buddhist luohan representations symbolizing humility and learning.
The inscription to the upper left features a poetic eulogy, while the vertical inscription on the right identifies the figure as:
(No. 9 The Venerable Patraṇaka)
— Patraṇaka being a transliteration of one of the original 18 Arhats in Chinese Buddhist tradition.
Additional seal marks and colophon details suggest the rubbing may have been taken from a temple stela or monastic stone carving.
