Poll Money: 1692 document on a single folio leaf of paper being a receipt for twenty shillings poll money assessed on a clerk of the Chapel Royal, signed by two of the Commissioners for Poll Money with the remains of their red wax seals. In 1692, "poll money" referred to a tax levied on individuals, regardless of their income or property, to fund the war against France. This tax, also known as a poll tax, was a quarterly payment for a year, and it was intended to help raise revenue for the ongoing conflict. The basic rate was a shilling per head, but those with wealth or certain professions were subject to surcharges
