A Collection of Mid-20th Century Novelty Ceramic Character Egg Cups
An assortment of approximately 25 vintage novelty ceramic egg cups featuring various anthropomorphic and character designs. The collection is composed of glazed earthenware and pottery, with forms ranging from traditional footed egg cups with painted faces to figural bust-shaped and full-bodied character pieces. Notable items include a pair of face cups with blue and pink ribbon accents inscribed HERS and HIS, a trio of laughing clown character cups in red, yellow, and blue costumes, and a full-bodied standing clown figure with a yellow ruff and red hat. Other pieces include multiple footed cups with flirting eye motifs and a zoomorphic cup modelled as a cat or dog with long ears and a polka-dot body. The decoration consists of hand-painted overglaze and underglaze details. One cup is inscribed HERS to the base and another matching cup is inscribed HIS to the base. No other factory marks or maker names are clearly visible. These items are characteristic of mid-20th-century British novelty pottery and are presented in the style of makers such as Shorter and Son or Tony Wood.
