A British South Africa Company Medal with ‘Matabeleland 1893’ reverse. Named to: Troopr C F W Nauhaus Victoria Colmn (Trooper, Victoria Column).
This medal was awarded to Imperial and British South Africa Company’s forces who took part in operations to capture the Matabele King Lobengula, from 16 October – 4 December 1893. During this campaign, the Shangani Patrol (or Wilson's Patrol), a 34-strong unit of the British South Africa Company, was ambushed and annihilated by more than 3,000 Matabele warriors in pre-Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Commanded by Major Allan Wilson, the patrol was attacked just north of the Shangani River; Its dramatic last stand, sometimes called "Wilson's Last Stand", achieved a prominent place in the British public imagination and, subsequently, in Rhodesian history, similar to events such as the Battle of the Little Big Horn and the Battle of the Alamo in the United States.
Extremely Fine (EF) condition.
