A MILITARY GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL 1793-1814 WITH BADAJOZ AND SALAMANCA CLASPS TO WATERLOO VETERAN WITH THE 30TH FOOT. A Military General Service medal with Badajoz and Salamanca clasps, named to J. Winders 30th Foot. John Winders from Histon in Cambridgeshire in 1788. He enlisted with the 2nd Battalion of the 30th Cambridgeshire Regiment of Foot on the 27th November 1807. He is recorded as having served with this Battalion in the Peninsula and at Waterloo. The battalion fought gallantly at the siege of Badajoz during March 1812, as part of the 5th Division they created a diversion by climbing the San Vicente Bastion with ladders, and as a consequence were the first men to enter the town. At Waterloo the formed a square alongside the 2/73rd and withstood many attacks from the French , so much so that they lost 45% of their strength that day. Winders was discharged at Fermoy on the 29th April in 1817 when the Battalion was reduced in size. Both clasps confirmed to this recipient. With copied papers and research.
