LATE 17TH-CENTURY SOUTH GERMAN EBONY CASKET WITH PIERCED BRASS MOUNTS

More Information

Rectangular ebony casket, the exterior finely engraved throughout with dense diagonal line-work arranged in opposing chevrons and lozenge panels, creating a bold geometric zigzag ground. The lid centred by a diamond-shaped reserve framed by pierced and engraved brass strapwork, with conforming vertical mounts to the sides and corners.

The front with an elaborate pierced brass escutcheon centred by a cast and applied classical male figure riding upon a swan, possibly representing Apollo, whose sacred attribute was the swan, set within scrolling strapwork and engraved borders. The whole secured with engraved brass bands and corner mounts.

The engraved linear ground, architectural symmetry, and pierced brass mounts are characteristic of late 17th-century South German workmanship, particularly Augsburg production.

Provenance: Château de Chalain.
