ROYAL.  A PARCEL GILT SILVER BROOCH with cast oblong engraved bas relief view of a schloss, possibly Callenberg, the textured surround applied with oak leaves and acorns, the reverse engraved From the Queen Coburg Oct 13th 1862, 55mm l, 38g
In September 1862 Queen Victoria travelled to Brussels to arrange the betrothal of the Prince of Wales (late Edward VII) to Princess Alexandra.  On September 4 she arrived at Reinhardsbrunn, the home of her brother in law Ernest II, Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha and thence to the palace at Coburg where she stayed until 17th October visiting many of the local beauty spots.  The present brooch is likely therefore to be a royal memento perhaps commissioned as a gift to one of her retinue and presented a few days before her departure (source RCT, RCIN 980039.aq_
