An early 19th century oil on canvas portrait of Regimental Sergeant Major William Middleditch of the Grenadier Guards, shown wearing his Waterloo medal. The painting comes with family provenance in the form of letters, much of which is anecdotal regarding his part in the battle. The letters claim he was 'Field-Gazetted' to the rank of Captain in recognition of his meritorious service and that the portrait was given to him by the regiment, however army records show he was never promoted to the rank of Captain. However the Suffolk branch of the Grenadier Guards did pay tribute at his grave in Bury St Edmunds on the 200th Anniversary of The Battle of Waterloo - see attached provenance, image of gravestone and newspaper article
