A journal belonging to Charles Fosling, sailmaker on board the ship Roman Empire, covering the period 27th August 1867 to 14th April 1873, recording a number of voyages from Calcutta to London and back again, including details of weather conditions and activity onboard, with brief notes on the death and subsequent burial of the blacksmith in Calcutta, the drowning of a man overboard, etc, the later pages containing pencil drawings of ship's sails at various scales; with a watercolour sketch by Fosling depicting a ship dismasted while rounding the Cape Of Good Hope, dated 'May the 2nd 1849' (2) (at fault)
