"OUIDA" [i.e. Maria Louise de la Ramée]: 'Puck: his vicissitudes, adventures, observations, conclusions, friendships, and philosophies, related by him himself and edited by Ouida.', London, Chapman & Hall, 1870, 1st edition, 3 volumes, uniform old half calf gilt worn. The author was born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, though lived an extravagant lifestyle in London and later Italy, entertaining many of the literary figures of the day. She was a god lover and staunch anti-vivisectionist whose novels often combine romanticism and social criticism, and wrote this monologue in the 'voice' of a 'garrulous and unusually philosophical dog'.
