A Victorian glass commemorative rummer, the cup bowl engraved 'In Memory of John & Thomas William Nabley who was Drowned at Barrington Colliery June 9 aged 11 & 9 years'
The tragic deaths of a miner's sons was reported in the Morpeth Herald 12 June 1895: "Sad Accident On The Ice At Barrington. Two Lads Drowned. A painful accident, which resulted in the death of two boys, occurred at Barrington on Wednesday. Two lads named John Nabley (11) and Thomas William Nabley (8), the sons of Thomas Nabley, miner, residing at Blacksmith Row, Barrington, were skating on the colliery pond in company with a number of other persons, when the ice gave way and they fell in, both being drowned. The lads had attended school in the afternoon, and had proceeded from there to the pond, which is a deep one. Attempts were made by their father to rescue them, but without avail, it being indeed only with great difficulty that he himself preserved his life. The sorrowful incident naturally was productive of great regret and consternation to the inhabitants of the colliery. Both bodies were recovered. An inquest was held on the following afternoon at the Clayton Arms Inn, Bedlington Station, by Coroner J. R. D. Lynn, when a verdict was returned to the effect that the deceased boys were accidentally drowned by falling through the ice in the colliery pond at Barrington whilst skating." http://www.dmm.org.uk/news18/8950112b.htm
