Henry Martyn Fourteenth edition, small 8vo, contemporary full maroon morocco with gilt decorations, rubbed to hinges and extremities, all edges gilt, near contemporary ink owner signature to ffep, half title, frontis and vignette engraved title page, xxxvi, pp.435, spotting to front and rear few leaves, generally vg, R. First published in 1816, this work recounts the life of Truro-born missionary and linguist Henry Martyn (1781–1812), noted for translating biblical texts into Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. After leaving India in 1810, he completed a revised Persian New Testament in Shiraz and engaged local scholars in religious debate, producing tracts defending Christianity. Despite initial openness, resistance to conversion persisted, prompting his departure. He died of tuberculosis in 1812 at age 31 while travelling to Constantinople. A scarce title.
