£200
The Lost World, by Arthur Conan Doyle, pub. Henry Frowde, Hodder and Stoughton, n.d. 1914?. The first UK edition, second issue, large paper copy. Distinctive brown cloth stamped with a dinosaur footprint, base of the spine reads 'Milford'. Milford refers to Humphrey Milford of the OUP, who took over the distribution of remaindered stock from Hodder (though the original publisher's name remains on the title page). This edition is prized for it's distinctive binding. Frontispiece and 12 mounted plates (complete), some coloured. Doyle himself posed for the illustrations of Professor Challenger.
Several of the plates are loose, but since the mount is tipped in, they could easily be glued back in. Soft vertical break to the cloth on the spine with some rubbing at the edges. Bookplate to the front endpaper 'Given in memory of Hugh V. Roberts' (the recipient untraced). A few light markings to the cloth, a little bit of 'bubbling', but withal a very decent copy of a Doyle rarity.
