Winterhalder & Hofmeier, Germany, an oak quarter-striking mantel clock, the eight-day duration movement having an anchor escapement and with ting-tang strike at each quarter, the backplate stamped W&H, Sch. for Winterhalder & Hofmeier of Schwarzenbach, Black Forest, the brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, with subsidiary dials to the top for Regulation and Silent/Chime, with a matted centre, applied gilt-metal mounts and blued-steel hands, the flat-top oak case with decorative brass feet and surmounted by a brass carrying handle, height 39cm/35cm, handle up/down. Notes: Anton Winterhalder founded the business in Schwarzenbach in the Black Forest in 1810 taking Anton Hofmeier into partnership in 1850, with the company finally closing upon the death of Linus, last son of Winterhalder, in 1930. The movements and clocks made by this firm are often believed to be the among the best produced in Germany at this time.
