£2,000 - £3,000
A 16th / 17th Century Turned Wood Trencher, of square form with central circular depression and small circular salt depression, 10.5ins x 10.625ins x .5ins
Provenance: The Rosslyn Neave Collection
Literature: See Madeleine Neave, "Vintage Breadboards" (2019), p.149 & 150, for illustration, with caption, "It feels like beech".
See Edward H. Pinto, "Treen, and other wooden bygones" (1969), pl.84 (bottom row) for similar example dated to 16th Century, and p.87-88
See Owen Evan-Hughes, "Domestic Utensils of Wood" (1932), p.59, pl.22 (H) for a very similar trencher dated to 16th-17th Century
Note: The majority of books/articles listing trenchers fail to give a definitive date of manufacture. Indeed, noted works such as Jonathan Levi, "Treen for the Table", conclude that trenchers are "supremely difficult to date". Many err on the side of caution, stating 17th century, whilst invariably adding ‘or earlier’.
