A PAIR OF IRISH CARVED OAK MIRRORS

19th century, the square plates within heavily carved and shaped borders, surmounted by a cresting apparently depicting the armorial of the Irish Wynne family and inscribed with their motto: 'Nec Me Meminisse Pigebit', 92.5cm high x 82cm wide (2)

Note: 'Nec Me Meminisse Pigebit' may be interpreted as 'Nor shall I regret to remember', a poignant legacy for an old Irish house. Famously the phrase is also used in the Aeneid chapter 4, in Aeneas' speech to Dido before his departure where his absolute commitment to his destiny and duty ultimately results in her death.
