CORPS D'ARMEE OF SCINDE ENDORSED COVER FROM JATTA WITH LONG CONTENTS REF. "CABUL", ETC.; 31 Dec. 1838 - 6 Jan. 1839 EL (very long 4-sheet contents; some overall creasing, and some tears - latter hardly affecting address side) from Gillespie to his wife in Kirkee, unusually endorsed on the front "From the Corps d'Armee of Scinde" with a fair boxed "BOMBAY/Bearing [9]" on the front. The lengthy contents give great detail of the Field Force's advance into Scinde, inc.; "...we are progressing towards the capital of the Ameers, caution must be observed and it behoves Sir John Keane's prudence to await at this place the arrival of the whole force... [before] the crossing of the Indus at Hyderabad... not less than 3,000 camels being required for Davidson and his crew...At the time that Shah Soujah reigned over the destinies of Cabul, these said Ameers paid him an annual tribute of ten lacs of Rupees......Herat is to be fortified...[being] the principal key by which an invading army might endanger our NW Frontier. To evade therefore the hostile designs of Russia... I dine tonight with Sir John Keane...The European part of this force is positioning to get to Cabool..." Fascinating and important Campaign letter.
