Short History of the Mamiya M645
The Mamiya M645, introduced in 1975, was Mamiya’s first 6×4.5 cm medium-format SLR system and one of the earliest cameras to popularise the 645 format. Designed for professionals who wanted high image quality in a smaller, faster-handling package, the M645 became a widely used camera for weddings, portraiture, and commercial work.
Key Historical Points
Launch: 1975 by Mamiya Camera Co., Japan.
Format: 6×4.5 cm on 120/220 film—allowing more frames per roll than 6×6 or 6×7 systems.
Design: A modular system with interchangeable lenses and viewfinders (but not film magazines on the original models).
Improvements: Followed by the M645 1000S (with 1/1000s shutter) and later by the 645 Super, Pro, and Pro TL, evolving into an advanced medium-format line.
Strengths: Compact size, excellent Sekor lenses, reliable mechanics, and faster shooting made it highly popular among professionals.
Legacy
The M645 series helped establish the 645 format as a mainstream professional option and laid the foundation for Mamiya’s later autofocus and digital medium-format systems.
