11th Hussars Officers Busby Tin & Associated Busby. Busby tin named to J.E.H Balfour now containing a dark brown fur busby made by James Cooper Maidstone, which has been fitted with Lancashire Hussars crimson bag having flat silver braid and silver gimp button. Busby has clearly never been fitted with any cockade, but still has it’s original stitched on triple gilt cord cap lines. Gilt corded chin chain backed with scarlet leather and traces of scarlet velvet. White over crimson plume with gilt ring in gilt plume holder. Leather headband with silk lining. Busby with damage to fur, bag a little faded and silver braid dull, plume with minimal crimson feathers, and velvet worn from 15th hussars chin chain.
John Edmund Heugh Balfour , born 23/01/1863,Eton 1877, commissioned Lt in the 4th (militia) btn Leinster regt 27/07/81), transferred into 11th Hussars 14th May 1884 and joined the regiment for its posting to Ireland he was promoted Capt 31/03/1891. The regiments subsequent posting was to India, however Balfour retired 1892. He joined Royal Devon Yeomanry in 28/01/93 as Capt, served in Boer war with Robert Horse, awarded DSO, Lt Col 02/12/05 retired after he married in 1910. He rejoined army as staff officer from 1917-18 and died 1952.
