AN INTERESTING PROBABLE CARPENTER'S MODEL FOR THE 14-GUN TWIN-MASTED BRIG-SLOOP DOVE OF CIRCA 1800 WITH LATER RESTORATIONS

the 40in. framed clinker-planked hull with chain plates and deadeyes, elegantly decorated red bulwarks, scored flush deck mounting turned wooden guns in stepped carriages, capstan with chain and wooden anchors, bitts, grating and some simple fittings, ebonised masts with some rigging and blocks, loosely mounted on cradle stand -- 42 x 51in. (107 x 130cm.)

No RN vessel named Dove mounted 14 guns; however, the Navy's urgent need for fast armed escorts and dispatch carriers from the outset of the Revolutionary Wars in 1793 generated several classes of so-called 'brig-sloops', at least two of which were flush-decked and mounted fourteen guns. The elegant painting along the bulwarks is strongly reminiscent of that more usually seen on more refined Admiralty models of the late 18th century.

Hull repainted, with some fittings later replaced clumsily. Date of original construction uncertain, but probably by first quarter 19th century.
