LETTER FROM A NAVAL OFFICER IN CHINA; cJuly 1858 env. (few faults) 'via Marseilles' to Castle Park, Exmouth, Devon, England franked 1d Red (11 singles) all with barred numeral '40' cancels, a further two stamps appear to be missing and with London, Exeter and Exmouth d.s. on rear. Endorsed None of us touched in the actions on the rear flap and with a small circular embossed "G" wafer seal also on rear, possibly Captain (later Admiral) Sidney Grenfell (1806-84) of HMS Amethyst in the Canton River. His death is recorded as being at the same address as this cover. Very scarce Cross Reference: CHINA, INCOMING OVERSEAS MAIL
