A JACK YEATS RARITY
Yeats, Jack B. A hand coloured Poster, headed "TO RECOVER THE LANE PICTURE FOR IRELAND / PUBLIC MEETING MANSION HOUSE 29th JAN. [1918] 8 P.M.", signed in plate, showing a man standing on a height, back to viewer, looking out over a coastal landscape with islands, dimensions of paper 22 ½" x 17 ½" (57 x 45cms), drawing 15" x 15" (38 x 38cms).
· The hand colouring in Watercolour is probably by Yeats himself.
· A very rare and important poster, probably made at the request of Lady Gregory,
who organised the Dublin meeting.
· See Pyle, Jack B. Yeats: His Cartoons and Illustrations, items 2161, 2162 and illustration p. 314. She records two examples of this design, both from Major Robert Gregory's collection, one hand coloured, with slightly differing dimensions (89 x 57cms, 70 x 44.5 cms). The present example does not match these dimensions, being smaller than either in height, (perhaps due to variations in the placing of type). The present item appears to be the only example known that is hand-coloured.
· Item 2162, which she illustrates, appears otherwise to match the present example (though 2162 is uncoloured) .
· Fold marks, a few tiny holes, but generally in excellent un-faded condition.
PROVENANCE : Lady Gregory's Collection, by descent.
