Contemporary Artisan Ceramic Plaque with Grotesque Relief

More Information

A single contemporary artisan ceramic plaque or tile, approximately square in form. The surface decoration features a high-relief sculpted central face of a grotesque or stylized animal figure, executed in unglazed natural clay, characterized by a wide, toothy grin. The surrounding field is decorated with a distressed, painted finish utilizing a mustard yellow base overlaid with swirling, abstract patterns in blue-gray. The reverse side is unglazed bisque ceramic and contains a recessed indentation bearing an impressed rectangular maker's mark composed of the stylized, interconnected letters LJC. The subject matter of the grotesque face is stylistically reminiscent of the Pra Rahu deity associated with Thai amulets, such as those connected to Luang Pu Rod.
