Dan Welldon, Protestant Cemetery, Rome 2004, 1/25, mounted silver gelatine print, 60cm x 60cm overall
This cemetery is also known as the English Cemetery and the Non-Catholic cemetery and is a very evocative part of Rome. It has a high density of very notable graves, including John Keats, Percy Shelley, Antonio Gramsci and Karl Briullov and many others. This is a lith print (also known as kodalith) printed by the photographer on Japanese manufactured Oriental Seagull paper. Lith printing uses a chemical developer which exponentially accelerates the development process time making each print unique and produces contrasty prints with gritty and harsh shadows which lend a very atmospheric quality to each print.
'I started my photographic career some 25 years ago in Scotland. I still love photographing a wide variety of subjects - mainly people (from actors to corporate and musicians) but also travel and architecture'
