David Jagger (British 1891-1958) Portrait of Mark Brickhill, Chairman of Winterbottom's Book Cloth Company, shown seated with his pipe and a copy of The Manchester Guardian on his lap, signed and dated 1948 lower right, oil on canvas, 112 x 86 cm, frame 132 x 106 cm Label verso inscribed: Mark Brickhill, Bewdley, Congleton Road, Alderley Edge, Cheshire, Chairman, Winterbottoms M/C Notes: The Winterbottom's Book Cloth company dominated the British and International bookcloth industry during the 19th and first half of the 20th Centuries. In 1900 the Brickhill family became intricately involved with Winterbottoms, having been hired to manage the day-to-day running of Victoria Mills, with a Mark Brickhill named a Director in 1908. A Harold Brickhill was also named in the probate of Georgina Winterbottom in 1934. This sitter, another Mark Brickhill, was a Director alongside Oscar Dunstan Winterbottom (1891-1955) and beyond Oscar's death- as Mark Brickhill is quoted in The Guardian in his role as Chairman in 1957.
