Whitworth .451 3-band percussion presentation rifle, dated 1859, with 39 inch sighted barrel, Birmingham proof-marks, hexagonal Whitworth rifling, border-engraved lock engraved with the Whitworth trademark of a wheatsheaf and crown over a 'W', plus 'WHITWORTH / 1859', full-stocked with chequered forend and wrist, patch-box engraved with 'THE GIFT / OF THE MOST NOBLE / THE MARQUIS OF WESTMINSTER K.G. / FOR THE USE OF THE 3rd OR WALLASEY / COMPANY OF THE CHESHIRE RIFLE VOLUNTEERS / FOR EVER / A.D. 1860', complete with rammer and sling swivels. Action at fault, a butt-plate screw and lock pin absent. Five Rifle Volunteer companies were formed in 1860 as part of the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment of Foot. Hugh Lupus Grosvenor, 1st Duke and Marquis of Westminster, inherited the estate of Eaton Hall in Cheshire and was MP for Chester between 1847 and 1869. Obsolete calibre, no licence necessary.
