A CHINESE PORCELAIN BLUE AND WHITE 'PALACE' BOWL

bearing a six character Kangxi mark to the base and probably of the period, with a gently everted rim, the interior decorated with a single lotus flower medallion, the exterior with six further lotus flowers and trailing foliage over a lappet band, 7.5cm high x 16cm diameter

The fine decoration of this bowl is done in homage to the famed 'Palace' bowls of the Chenghua period. A great deal of reverence was shown to the skill of the makers of this early period and this type of veneration was typical for Qing potters. The emperor Kangxi also used this as a tool to help soothe the transition into the new dynasty, through respect for the accomplishments of his predecessors. Provenance: Lady Enid Barstow, wife of Sir George Lewis Barstow (1874-1966), of Chapel House, Builth Wells. Part of a collection given to her as a donation for a charity auction she organised to raise funds for the Conservative party, but deemed inappropriate due to damages. Thence by family descent.
