A FINE GEORGE III PERIOD HARDWOOD WRITING SLOPE, with brass fittings and campaign handles to sides, blank cartouche to top, opening to black lined interior with fitted compartments including monogrammed inkwell. The slope has two large fitted compartments one of which features the name Augustus H. Griswold and date May 1817. The lineage of this former owner can be traced back to George Griswold b. 1574 in England. The other compartment features newspaper clippings and handwritten notes, some of the clippings appear to be on the topic of writing slopes. Dimensions: 56cm wide x 15cm high x 15.5cm deep approx.
