A SAFAVID ENGRAVED BRONZE MAGIC BOWL, PERSIA, 17TH CENTURY

The piece is decorated with extensive chasing and engraving across both the interior and exterior surfaces. The interior design is organised around the central boss, which displays a radiating fluted or petal-like motif. Surrounding the boss are concentric bands and polylobed cartouches containing cursive Arabic calligraphy in the Naskh or Thuluth style, set against a background of fine foliate and interlaced geometric patterns. The exterior mirrors this decorative program with a broad band of calligraphic script around the upper body and further interlaced motifs toward the base. The underside features a recessed central area corresponding to the interior omphalos.
