A RARE CHARLES I PEWTER ALE QUART STRAIGHT-SIDED TAVERN POT, CIRCA 1640. The slender tapering body with four incised bands, lip to rim, ownership initials 'GL' over 'IL' to strap handle, with flush lower attachment and cut-off terminal, maker mark of 'AF' inside base, extensive nature's gilding, 17.5cm high, 11.5cm diameter across base

Provenance: Excavated at Bull Wharf, London, Sold Sotheby's 9 May 2000, Lot 338

Literature: Illustrated and discussed, C. Rickets, 'Early English pewter Drinking Mugs' (2018), p. 17, no. 22. According to the author the maker's mark, AF with an elephant below the City of London shield, is most likely Arthur Fry (fl. 1632-c.1646).
