Hagiography - a Continental monastic pilgrim's devotional woodblock print-icon, from the Benedictine monastery of Einsiedeln Abbey, Schwyz, Switzerland and printed at their press, the right-hand field with Our Lady of the Hermits (The Black Madonna of Einsiedeln), above the Roman letter inscription: S. Maria Einsidl, the left-hand field with stigmata corresponding to the bodily wounds Christ received in the crucifixion and with radiating limbs of the martyr, above the Gothic Black letter inscription: H. Haus Kreuz, each incorporating Roman Catholic iconography and ecclesiastical vestments, the back of the unfolded sheet typically pierced and decoupage decorated with gold foil and coloured paper to stimulate the devotional candlelight, each icon within a double-line black-ruled border, 18cm x 29cm, 16th or early 17th century
