£80 - £120
A 'Chu Chin Chow' vase, potted on stage by a Wedgwood potter as part of the performance in a scene set in a marketplace, finished in creamy white and bearing the facsimile signatures of the writer, producer, director and lead actor Oscar Ashe, and his wife Elizabeth 'Lily' Brayton who also starred in the musical comedy, also bearing the years '1916 - 17 - 18 - 19', indicating this example was made in 1919, 19cm high. FOOTNOTE: Known as an extravagant spectacle and based on the story of 'Ali Baba And The Forty Thieves', 'Chu Chin Chow' opened in 1916, ran for five years, and smashed box office records. Another example of these stage-made pots can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum, Accession No. S.56-2003, but this form is more authentically Oriental or Asian than that example. A literal piece of London's vibrant and legendary musical theatre history.
