A mid 17th Century stumpwork and needlework panel, profusely decorated with a central figure of a Lady [Henrietta Maria] wearing a cape and gloved hands standing in a landscape, the upper section with clouds, birds, insect, butterfly, ladybird, foliage, the mid section with Church, two large flowers including a Tulip and rockery; the lower section with a recumbant Lion, large flowers, butterfly, fish pond, catepillar, a Chalice with tarnished gold thread and a leopard., the panel approx 31 x 38cm, framed and glazed [1]
Note: this panel is full of decorative devices rich with symbolism in particular the lion and leopard represent England with the caterpillar and butterfly being associated with Charles I.
wear commensurate with age, windows of church and aperture of chalice appear to have later coverings and area at lion's tail covered
