A Pair of Continental Majolica Parrots by Cipriano Piccolpasso, Cantagalli, Florence, circa 1900
A striking pair of large Italian majolica parrots, each modelled perched on a tree stump, with boldly coloured plumage in turquoise, green, and deep red glazes. Both signed to the bases “Cantagalli”, attributed to the celebrated Florentine pottery workshop founded by Ulisse Cantagalli, known for its revival of Renaissance maiolica and exuberant naturalistic style.
The birds display the distinctive crackle glaze and rich polychromy characteristic of the Cantagalli factory, evoking the influence of late 19th-century decorative arts and Orientalist taste.
Approx. 42cm high.
Condition: One with detached crest and wing feathers (present for restoration); both with some glaze wear and firing imperfections typical of the type.
