Pair of large Meissen flower-encrusted pot pourri vases and covers, circa 1880, blue crossed swords marks, incised numerals, each have flowering branch handles, applied with putti, painted with bouquets of flowers and encrusted with flowers and fruits, within rocaille moulded turquoise and gilt borders, gilt line rims, 61.5cm high max (one handle cracked and restuck, some chipping and losses to extremities)
Provenance: Hicks Beach Estate. The majority of pieces in this collection originate from Williamstrip, Coln St Aldwyn, family seat from 1788 to 2008 and thereafter Mill House, Coln St Aldwyn. Sir Michael Hicks Beach, Bt, succeeded his father as 9th Baronet of Beverston in 1854. He became a Conservative Member of Parliament in 1864 and served twice as Chancellor of the Exchequer, from 1885 to 1886 and again from 1895 to 1902. In 1906 he was raised to the peerage as Viscount St Aldwyn and in 1915 became the first Earl St Aldwyn.
One cover flower encrusted finial with chipping and losses to the tip. Further chipping and losses to petals and leaves. One handle on a vase has been cracked and restuck in three places with some associated losses to branch and leaves. The putti next to one handle is lacking one wing. Both vases have small flat chips to gilt upper rim. Both vases have scattered chipping to flowers, petals and leaves with a handful of loose pieces detached but present. One with short firing crack to footrim occurred during manufacturing process. Both of good decorative appearance, no signs of restoration
