Cumberland - Curwen Family. An interesting collection of 18th cent. manuscript documents & ephemera:
(1) John Christian Curwen - 24 invoices for goods for Broughton Colliery, suppliers names & goods listed, 1788-1816. (Some to John Johnson, agent for JCC). (2) Eldred Curwen (1692-1745) - letter dated 5 March 1769 from a Mr. Addison to unnamed recipient giving details of Eldred Curwen's will. (3). Letter from Edward Grave, solicitor in Penrith, to John Christian Curwen, front page accounts, second page re. "The Lands of Nicholson and Monkhouse, which lay within the boundary of Lord Lonsdale's manor of Newton and out of the limits of Catterlen. The tenants would probably apply to Lord Lonsdale to assist them etc.". (4) Edward Grave - "An account of the ffines and rents received in respect of Catterlen (Newton Reigny)", clear details of tenants names and monies. Undated but watermarked 1794. (Catterlen, passed by will to Isabella, wife of Henry Curwen of Workington Hall in 1774).
(5) Letter from Thomas Greene of Grays Inn, London, 1795, to (Mrs. Curwen) re. settlement of a case involving (John Christian Curwen). (6) Note dated 22 Oct. 1766, signed with initials HC or JC referring to death of 23 persons, possibly miners?
