Jean Varon was the fashion label of British designer John Bates (1935 - 2022). Bates was a style pioneer, who is sometimes credited with having invented the miniskirt. He designed many recognisable garments of the 1960s, including for Diana Rigg in 'The Avengers' (the black leather catsuit being the most notable) and Julie Christie in 'Shampoo'.
John had a close association with Cilla Black. She acted as model for him during the late 1960s. Bates was selected as the designer for her iconic church wedding dress worn in March 1969. He additionally designed many of the outfits for Cilla worn during the late 1960s, particularly visible on the 'Cilla' show.
By the 1970's the 'Jean Varon' label was known particularly for their evening gowns, several of which are included in this auction.
