£100 - £150
Exchequer Receipt, 1772, certifying that £115 7s 3½d was received from the Earl of Northington for 'necessaries' delivered to the Treasury by Horatio Walpole. Manuscript document, folio, signed by Joseph Tullie and witnessed by Charles Bedford. Necessaries are the essential expenses of running the Treasury and are handled by the office of Usher. Walpole was Usher at the time and Joseph Tullie was his deputy. Charles Befford was a clerk in the Ushers office. On Tullies death in 1774, Bedford became Walpole's deputy in his place. Robert Henley, 1st Earl of Northington was Lord High Chancellor. VF and an interesting document illustrating the complex workings of the Exchequer.
