Geology. An important collection of approx. 185 specimen labels or tickets, early 19th c and later, both dealers and collectors, stock and collections, mostly mounted in an album, some loose, almost all of which are inscribed, occasionally blank, comprising, eleven manuscript labels from Sir Arthur Russell, 6th Baronet (1878-1964), mineralogist and eminent collector of specimens and of collections of specimens, including: 'Blende and galena in calcite on Carboniferous limestone, Rathfarnham, Co Dublin [Ireland]. No 75 of a collection of rocks and minerals presented to Lady Elizabeth Anne Coxe Hippisley of Ston Easton Park, Somerset by Robert Blake MP of Dublin Dec 1806'; 'Chalybite, Fowey Consols Mine, Tywardreath, Cornwall. R Talling of Lostwithiel specimen'; 'Cassiterite (Wood Tin), Bejewans (Bejowans) tin stream works, Sancreed, Cornwall circa 1856. J. Lavin of Penzance specimen. Baroness Burdett-Coutts collection'; three illustrated and manuscript labels from the Charles Upham Shepard (1804-1886) collection, American mineralogist and chemist; nine loose and six mounted labels from John Gregory (1832-1899), mineralogist and founder of the eponymous specimens business, c. 1874, all letterpress printed, the former nine with his home address: 88, Charlotte St., Fitzroy Sq., London, each inscribed in manuscript by a uniform hand, with taxonomy for American, German, Polar, and Scandinavian specimens, as well as one specimen from Derbyshire; a mid-19th c manuscript label, n.d., inscribed: 'Gold from Masingua (sic; ?Masinga, Machakos County, Kenya) and Vumba (/Bvumba Mountains, Zimbabwe-Mozambique border), 10 days journey from Tete, on the Zambezi. Brought down to Quelimane by miners who were driven out by the natives', named: Prof. J. Tennant [James Tennant (1808-1881), mineralogist to Queen Victoria], the travel narrative bears close resemblance to a published account: Frederick A.A. Simmons 'from his manuscript notes of a journey made there about four years ago' (Lock, Gold: Its Occurrence and Extraction, London, 1882, p. 15); further British specimens, including one collected by himself, others with various provenances; five labels from Bryce McMurdo Wright, covering both Senior's and Junior's tenures, four letterpress and manuscript, one just letterpress, all addressed Great Russell Street; John Henry Heuland (1778-1856), manuscript label: Hh_508_1832, Tile copeer, Co***rro Mine, Cornwall; Colonel J. W. Rimington (1832–1909), two manuscript labels within typographical borders; seven mixed labels for E.P. Bottley, and Gregory, Bottley & Co; seven labels from the dealership of Francis Henry Butler (1849-1935); Williams Collection of Scorrier House, near Redruth, Cornwall, a manuscript note: 'A Tin Stone [i.e. Cassiterite] from the 302 East of Engine Shaft - Dolcoath Mine 15 July 1870 Wm P***s'; Alexander Fleming, of Loughrigg, Ambleside, an associate of Ruskin, eight line pencil manuscript label for a piece of Welsh gold, dated 1881; William Peters (1830-1913), Dealer in Mineral Specimens, 12 Penventon Terrace, Redruth; others, including two labels from the Gwinnell Collection for domestic British specimens; two loose and four mounted S. Henson, 277, Strand, London, c. 1878-88, including Fosterite, Vesuvius; Dr. A.E. Foote of Philadelphia, various; Walter F. Ferrier; Krantz; some institutional, Accrington Museum, Smithsonian Institute, United States Geological Survey, Yale University, Fersman Mineralogical Museum, Moscow, Geological & Prospecting Museum, Moscow; some unidentified, including a 19th c Japanese manuscript label for Pyrolusite from *** Hakui gori (?sic) of Noto Province; etc
