A Caterpillar Club badge, modelled as a caterpillar with gem-set eyes, engraved on the reverse P/O D. Hewitt. Length 1.9cm.

Duncan Alexander Hewitt, a member of 501 Squadron, was born in 1919 in Toronto, Canada. He joined the RAFVR, and in September of 1939, he was called up. Commissioned in December 1939, he joined 501 Squadron in France during mid-May 1940.

He shared in the destruction of a Heinkel 111 when the 501 engaged a number of enemy aircraft of the KG53, just east of Forges-Les-Eaux.

When operating back in the UK in July of 1940, Hewitt claimed to have shot down a Hurricane with German markings. The very next day in Hurricane P3084, while chasing down a Do17 reconnaissance aircraft over Portland Bill, Hewitt went down. In his combat report, HAV Hogan believed he was caught in the enemy aircraft's slipstream and forced downwards.
