AN IMPORTANT PLANTAGENET PEWTER SAUCER OR SPICE PLATE, ENGLISH, CIRCA 1400. The flat rim with hammer mark within a circle, and strengthening semi-circular bead to the rear hammered edge, booge again hammered, single incised line around boss, diameter 12.7cm

Reputedly found near Middlesham Castle, Wensleydale, North Yorkshire, the childhood home of King Richard III.

There are thought to be only two other examples of this type of English saucer recorded. The first in the Sandy Law and later John Douglas Collections, sold Phillips, Chester, 29 September 1997, Lot 111 and Bonhams, Oxford, 19 April 2021, Lot 290. The second, known as the 'Tong Castle Saucer' was excavated in 1978, from a well in the keep of Tong Castle, Shropshire. It is now in the Collection of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers, see 'Supplementary Catalogue (1979) S1/125.
