English Civil War - Manuscript templates for appointing officers to command Royalist forces. Two folio sheets 41cm x 33cm watermarked & dated to the twelfth years of His Majesty's reigns. (Charles I, ie. 1637), "By William Earle and Marquesse of Hereford, Baron Beauchampe, Chancellor of the University of Oxon, etc. etc.". Sheet 1. Appointing the recipient identified with initials A.B. as "Colonell of a Regiment of Ffoote soldiers of the Trained Band and also Captaine of a Ffoote Company in the said Regiment raised or to be raised within the County of (blank)". Sheet 2. (a) Appointing C.D. as "Leiutenant Colonell of a Regiment of Ffoote of the Trained Band and also Captain of a Company of Ffoote in the said Regiment. Whereby A.B. Esq. is Colonell raised or to be raised within the County of Somersett". (b) Appointing E.F. as Captain in A.B.'s Regiment. (c) Appointing G.H. as Leiutenant (sic) in A.B.'s Regiment. Footnote at bottom of second sheet reads "And ye same manner for an Ensigne". Circa 1640's. These composed as a template for future use when appointing officers for the Royalist army. The actual date spaces are not filled in & only the second entry reveals the County as Somersett. William Seymour, 2nd Earl of Hertford, was a prominent English nobleman & a political opponent of King Charles the First before becoming a leading Royalist, Commander & advisor during the English Civil War.
