Loss of HMS Foylebank Signed Ernie Pettiford Survivors 4th July 1940. 4 Jul 86 Plymouth Loss of HMS Foylebank and the posthumous award of the Victoria Cross to acting leading seaman Jack Foreman Mantle Portland Harbour 4th July 1940. On 4th July 1940 HMS Foylebank was attacked out of the sun by a formation of at least fifteen Junkers 88 dive bombers. Acting Leading Seaman Mantle, Captain of the Starboard multiple Pom Pom Ack Ack gun was immediately in action, his left leg shattered by a bomb, but he stood by his gun and continued firing until the end of the attack, when he fell by his gun. Of the seven ratings on this gun, four were killed and two were badly injured. Personally Signed by Ernie Pettiford on board during the action and Survivor Certified Copy No 105 of 188.
