English porcelain turquoise ground composite part tea and dessert service in the Minton style, impressed black registration lozenges, impressed T.F factory marks, probably for Thomas Ford, circa 1870-80, basket-moulded with gilt rims, comprising two large figural comports with putti supports, four medium sized comports, four low footed comports, eighteen plates; together with an English porcelain turquoise ground part tea-service with shaped gilt C-scroll rims, comprising: three plates, ten teacups, four coffee cups and 33 saucers and a bowl (damages and repairs)
Provenance: Hicks Beach Estate. The majority of pieces in this collection originate from Williamstrip, Coln St Aldwyn, family seat from 1788 to 2008 and thereafter Mill House, Coln St Aldwyn. Sir Michael Hicks Beach, Bt, succeeded his father as 9th Baronet of Beverston in 1854. He became a Conservative Member of Parliament in 1864 and served twice as Chancellor of the Exchequer, from 1885 to 1886 and again from 1895 to 1902. In 1906 he was raised to the peerage as Viscount St Aldwyn and in 1915 became the first Earl St Aldwyn.
Two large comports - 24.5 cm diam. x 20 cm high: in good order. Four medium sized comports - 24.5 cm diam. x 14 cm high: one with chipping to putti's feet, another with one putto's head restuck and further light chipping to toes. Four low footed comports: one extensively cracked and riveted, another cracked and riveted and the third & fourth with patches of staining. Eighteen basket-moulded plates, 23.5 cm diam.: Three plates with C-scroll borders, one with section of rim cracked out but present, all extensively cracked and damaged. Slop bowl is extensively cracked and with riveted repairs. Seven teacups are cracked and riveted and the remainder are also cracked. All four coffee cups are cracked. Six saucers are cracked. Some rubbing, glaze crazing and wear to gilding and slight flaking to turquoise ground.
