Artefact: Medieval copper alloy seal matrix found in Great Horkesley near Colchester, 27.4x21.2mm, bearing the inscription 'S'ROGERI: VVADEWAT' along with what appears to be a large image of a church, over a smaller crenelated structure possibly symbolising a castle. This would therefore be an emblem of ecclesiatical authority over secular power. The inscription means the Seal of Roger Wadawat, and by the symbolism likely a clergyman. The surname Wadawat would be the equivalent of modern Wade or Wadeford, and probably means Wade Watch, a river crossing guard. A Portable Antiquities Scheme report indicates that the shape of the seal, a pointed oval, became common in the 13th century. Exceptionally good condition. (PAS ID SF-DC0F7D)
